What a Rugby Game Taught Me About Business

Yesterday, I found myself in the stands, watching a final rugby match for SBP 10s and Malaysia Super Schools Rugby. The energy was electric where students, parents, and teachers all buzzing with excitement. As I watched the teams clash on the field, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the intense action unfolding before me and the world of entrepreneurship and innovation.

One moment, in particular, stood out. The game was tight, with both teams neck and neck, and the clock ticking down. Suddenly, the opposing team made a daring play, catching everyone off guard. For a moment, it looked like they might pull ahead, but then something remarkable happened. The team I was rooting for did not panic. Instead, they regrouped quickly, communicated clearly, and adjusted their strategy on the fly. You could see the gears turning as they read the field, anticipated the next move, and executed a flawless counter-attack. In the end, they scored a try that sealed their victory.

That moment was a powerful reminder of what it takes to succeed in business.

Just like in that rugby game, the entrepreneurial journey is full of unexpected twists and turns. Competitors might make bold moves, market conditions might shift suddenly, or your carefully laid plans might hit a snag. But as I saw that day on the rugby field, the key to overcoming these challenges lies in your ability to adapt, communicate, and innovate.

In the heat of the game, the players didn’t rely solely on their training or individual talent. They leaned on each other, communicated openly, and trusted their instincts. This is exactly what we need to do as entrepreneurs. When challenges arise, it’s essential to stay calm, reassess the situation, and pivot when necessary. This ability to adapt not only keeps us in the game but often puts us in a position to win.

Communication played a crucial role in that team’s success as well. On the field, the players were constantly talking, signaling, and making sure everyone was on the same page. In business, clear and open communication is just as critical. Whether we are leading a startup or managing a project, ensuring that everyone understands the vision and strategy is key to executing effectively and responding to challenges.

And then there’s the innovation. The unexpected play by the opposing team was a bold move. It something out of the ordinary that could have shifted the game in their favor. But the winning team responded with their own creative tactics, turning a potential loss into a triumphant victory. In entrepreneurship, innovation is not just about having a groundbreaking idea. It is about how we respond to challenges with creative solutions that set us apart from the competition.

Finally, the resilience of those players left a lasting impression on me. Throughout the game, they faced setbacks—missed opportunities, tough tackles, and the pressure of a ticking clock. But they didn’t let those moments define them. Instead, they kept pushing forward, learning from their mistakes, and giving it their all until the very end. This resilience is what sets successful entrepreneurs apart. When faced with failure or adversity, it’s not about giving up but about picking ourselves up, learning and pushing forward with even greater determination.

As I left that Malaysia Super Schools Rugby game, I realized that the lessons learned on that field are the same ones that drive success in business. Adaptability, communication, innovation, and resilience. These are the qualities that will help us navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and come out on top. Just as that team won the game by working together and thinking on their feet, we can achieve our goals too by embracing these principles and applying them to our own journey.
